NARRATIVE STRUCTURE: TIDAL WAVE

When it came to planning our music video, we wanted to create a video that had a story line that could be interpreted in multiple ways. We looked at the idea of a linear narrative. This is essentially where the story line follows events chronologically and there is a climax and a resolution. We also looked at using a circular narrative. This is where the story essentially starts and ends in the same place. For example, if we were to start our video in a bedroom with a drink being spiked, the video would end in the same place with the same events occurring. In the end we c hose to use a linear style of narrative which would allow us to unfurl events in a way that would be leading towards the audience but also allow audience members to identify with the story line and understand it as it occurs.

My video works in a linear way as it starts at the beginning. This sounds ironic but essentially means the video starts where the story starts, in the case of my video, this is in a bedroom with the male character asleep and the female character acting in an abnormal way as she is about to cause a form of disequilibrium. This disequilibrium is the next part of the story chronologically. This is where we meet the male character in the Market and the chase begins. This can be considered a disequilibrium as the two characters are kept apart from each other. It could also be considered a disequilibrium as it shows an element of inequality in the two characters and their gender. This part of the video shows a female character holding power over the male character. This makes the two characters unequal and reinforces the idea of a disequilibrium. This continues throughout my video until we reach the scene at the top of the car park. This is where the equilibrium is approached. Chronologically, this is the last even in the video as it is where my two characters meet and the mask is left behind, this creates an equilibrium in terms of gender roles and themselves as characters as they are ‘at one’ with each other.
Below, i have included a list of narrative techniques i have used in my music video and how i have used them.
